wordsinhere is a wonderful idea—it's a one-stop place for meeting great writers and blending right into a very warm and nurturing writing community. I personally feel that the fiction and poetry groups were invaluable in making me write more and better, and now that I am in Shanghai, I miss my writing groups!

I went along to my first wordsinhere meeting in 2001 with a jaded sense of hope. I’d spent so many open mic nights in dreary pubs with a background of booing hissing and heckling by 'poets' with long teeth and short attention spans. I'd given up on inspiration's survival in Europe. After all, Amsterdam is fiercely competitive for artists all jostling for the spotlight. How nicely surprised I was, then, to discover a bunch of likeminded people who not only got on with making their own art, but encouraged new talent as well. It took me a while to believe it, and that if such people took me seriously, perhaps I should, too.

And now I'm enjoying my first year of serious writing success, the very tip of it at least, I shall always be grateful for wordsinhere. I read my work on stage for wordsinhere's The Open Stanza shows and always left feeling taller. I had poetry and a short story published in the reputable Versal and I know, without doubt, that a good deal of my recent success (with my novel Manwife) rides on the back of wordsinhere. I hope it keeps going, keeps welcoming and well, and continues to dig its urgent spurs into the flank of those who haven't yet learnt to ride properly.
