Master Class on Publication

Facilitator: Michele Hutchison
Dates: Sundays, 5 and 12 October
Time: 12h00 - 16h30
Cost: €150, €135 (CJP/students/65+)

You’ve been writing for a while, have a project well underway and are wondering how to find a publisher for your work. This class will begin with a look at how to shape or refine your work with regard to the publishing market: in essence how to position and pitch your project. Are you writing something that has commercial potential or not? Michele Hutchison will review the kinds of books editors are currently looking for internationally. The second half of the session will consider literary agents, publishers, vanity publishers and self-publishing, how to present your work to them and what to expect from a working relationship with them. What does an agent do? What kind of editing should you expect? How should you go about self-publishing if you don’t find a traditional publisher?

Mastering Screenwriting

Facilitator: Matthew Curlewis
Dates: Sundays, 19 and 26 October
Time: 12h00 - 16h30
Cost: €150, €135 (CJP/students/65+)

This workshop is designed for writers who have had some experience with scripts and screenwriting, and would like to sharpen a few skills in their tool-set. By examining example scripts and participants’ writing samples we will focus on macro level elements such as character arcs, story turning points and sequence structures, as well as micro elements such as conflict, hopes and fears, and characters’ wants and needs within scenes themselves. Ideally participants will bring a scene, or a number of scenes of their own they would like to work on, but additionally there will be scene-writing opportunities within the sessions themselves.

Poetry: The Long and Short of It, 1&2

Facilitator: Kate Foley
Dates: Sundays, 2 and 9 November
Time: 12h00 - 16h30
Cost: €150, €135 (CJP/students/65+)

Students wishing to participate in only one day pay half of the total course fee

Two stand-alone but related day courses to help the poet who wants to become a skilful practitioner:

On Day 1, we’ll find, capture, pare down and point up a successful short poem.

On Day 2, we’ll frame our ideas, choose an appropriate form and discuss ways to sustain and revise a longer poem.

Through innovative writing exercises, exchange of ideas and feedback, we’ll gain a better idea of how to marry inspiration with discipline. We’ll look at the ways in which other poets have mastered the challenges of short and long poems. Special attention will be given to techniques of revision, maintaining an active writing practice and preparing for publication.

Diving Deeper:
Mastering Your Creative Self

Facilitator: Sandra Jensen
Dates: Friday and Sunday, 14 and 16 November
Time: Friday 19h00 - 21h30, Sunday 11h00 - 16h00
Cost: €150, €135 (CJP/students/65+)

Diving Deeper is a form of ‘soul-yoga’; a writing process that encourages you to take a risk and write from your darkest and your brightest places. You will be supported to write from a state of deep presence and awareness - without preconceived ideas about what or how you “should” write. You will discover how fear and uncertainty is a source of inspiration and strength and not a hindrance to creativity; you will learn how to make friends with the ‘blank page’. Whether you have ‘writer’s block’, are in the writing flow, are a complete beginner or simply looking to explore your creativity, the sustained focus of this workshop will encourage a radical shift in your relationship to writing.
