5 December 2003
I am looking for someone who wants
to write a Sinterklaas poem for me. If you want to do this send
me an email and I will let you know what the poem should be about.
Ok, thanks a lot.

December Literary Picks
R—
Is it more difficult now, than
ever before, to write poetry? Or, should I ask, is it more difficult
to access our cultural vocabulary in all this noise? The public
spaces of our world are determined by a few who take what we create
as culture and sell it back to us in packages. Is poetry immune
to this economy?
I feel that words are everywhere.
We are communicating constantly, we have so many choices on how.
I am emailing. I am in the process of email. Email as action. It
is silent here except for the taps of my fingers on keys.
With so much being said (emailed,
messaged, faxed, copied, pasted, erased), is there still room for
poetry? There is ample public space for it, and more literary mags
than you can count, but what about the poets? Those urban ones among
us especially: cities are relentless with their words. It is no
longer a question of has it already been written. It is
now a question of is it not all interminably said.
The question of space is one
important to American poetry in particular, and perhaps that explains
my own preoccupation. What is louder on paper, the words over which
you sweat to choose or the silence that seeps between the lines?
Mind your line breaks.

CALLS FOR WRITERS
The Lions Club of Castle Point is celebrating
their 25th Anniversary by holding an open poetry competition which
is available to anyone in the UK aged 18 or over. The income from
the competition, which hopefully will become an annual event, will
enable the Club to expand its local, national and international
charitable work.
Poems - which must be the original and unpublished
work of the person making the submission - can be in any style and
up to 40 lines on any subject and should be submitted by 30 April
2004. Entry fees are £5 for the first poem and £2.50
for any additional poems. There is no limit to the number of poems
that can be submitted, though no competitor may win more than one
prize.
For extended guidelines, send a stamped
self-addressed envelope to B. MacDonald at the LCCP Poetry Competition,
36 Burlington Gardens, Hadleigh, Essex SS7 2JL or by email to lionspoetry.comp@virgin.net.
The monthly Sneaknacht in Utrecht gives
new and 'old' artists a chance to get on stage and give the public
a peak of their talent! Have you written some poems, stories or
other literary products and do you want to get on stage? Contact
