April Literary Picks
FROM THE PRESSES:
SPRING SHOWERS OF STANZAS
It’s no typo that there are two Stanzas in April.
On Sunday 17 April, The Open Stanza will officially make its move to the new Nachttheater Sugar Factory, opening this April in the Leidseplein. On Thursday 21 April, The Open Stanza will hold its last Volta show.
‘The move to the Sugar Factory was important to us on many levels. The Sugar Factory is very supportive of local initiatives like ours and particularly supportive of the local, international literary community,’ explains Prue Duggan, poet and Curator of The Open Stanza. ‘But Volta is where we got our start, and has been supportive since the beginning. We can look back on nearly three years of great performances on their stage.’
The premier show at the Sugar Factory will be a unique opportunity to see wordsinhere’s “House” Poets & Writers on the same stage, on the same night. ‘wordsinhere was begun by a bunch of us who felt that it was time the local literary community took some risks and reached beyond its borders,’ continues Duggan. ‘We rarely perform together anymore, so we thought the Sugar Factory opening would be a good chance to get on stage together, introduce ourselves to a new area of town, and hopefully to new people.’ The first “Sugar Show” will also include live music from Zimbabwean Rina Mushonga and her band.
If you miss the Sunday opening, or can’t get enough of The Open Stanza, head down to Volta on Thursday, 21 April for the grand finale show at Volta. This special Farewell Stanza will feature visiting UK poet Ruth O’Callaghan, Philip Fokker (NL) and B. McNolty (IRL), with live music from Sahand & Barak. Regular Stanza goers will probably recognize Sahand Sahebdivani from his previous Stanza appearances as storyteller and poet.
Don't miss a single month or meter! More...
