NEWS
A review of Versal 3 by Kara Kellar Bell is in issue 11 of Laura Hird's extensive review site, and Kellar Bell also recommends Versal in her "Best of the Small Press" article, also published on that site. She writes: "Versal 3 packs a punch, but does so with a velvet glove of beautiful and lyrical poetry...This is a first class magazine and comes highly recommended...With its high production values, Versal is a pleasure to hold and leaf through, and deserves a place on any bookcase." If you haven't yet held it in your hand, go here...
In related news, the Versal editors are heading to Paris this month to present Versal during the Lire en Fête literary festival. Versal editors Megan M. Garr and Cralan Kelder, along with Utrecht-based contributor Anna Arov and US poet Marilyn Hacker, will read from the current and past editions at English-language bookstore The Red Wheelbarrow. And wordsinhere Accomplices Kelly Atkinson and Robert Comber are coming along for the gezelligheid. We're particularly looking forward to the road trip and Parisian espressos.
And in more related news, Versal is open for submissions again! Click here for details...
This month marks the exciting start of Salon des Mots in Utrecht! Come down to Café de Leugen for a night of live writers and musicians. Special guests include Prue Duggan (our favorite Stanza hostess), Bernard Christiansen and Sylvia Hubers, Arjan Witte, Fred Bloemink, and music from Danibal (from Dial Prisko) and Polle. Emceed by the Russian diva Anna Arov. Did we mention the show is free?
After some reflection, we are changing the name of our writing program at The English Bookshop to The Writing Workshops. We feel that the word "workshops" better describes our goals and more accurately expresses our philosophy that good writing (and writers) can be encouraged by their communities and peers, but that there is no 12-step program to greatness. Oh, if there were! But why make Keats roll in his grave? There's no need...
Two new Curators have joined the wordsinhere team: Robert Glick and Kai Lashley have come on board to strut the stuff of fiction and already some great new initiatives have begun, particularly the Stop-Drop-& Write days. Both writers have joined the Versal editorial team to read fiction submissions, as Versal hopes to strengthen the presence of quality fiction between its pages. Anna Arov has also joined the Versal team to help with the poetry contributions. Issue 4 is looking good!
And Jeremy Keighley is stepping down as Curator to focus on his writing, his new job, and his new kid. Jeremy has worked with wordsinhere for several years, particularly with The Open Stanza. He will be missed as part of our Curating team, but luckily Jeremy is still very much a part of wordsinhere. And this month you can catch him in De Pijp. TV screens around the Albert Cuyp Markt will show people reading love poems in a variety of languages, and Jeremy will be among them. For more information, visit www.wereldindebuurt.nl.
CALLS FOR WRITERS
The English Bookshop and wordsinhere have put together a fantastic program of workshops that are designed for writers at any stage in their careers. The workshops are in the genres Short Fiction, Novel, and Poetry — and because we feel that there should be no barriers to the writing process, our workshop program is affordable.
We're hosting another Open Day on Tuesday, 11 October from 6:30-8:30pm at The English Bookshop. It's a chance to meet the workshop leaders and find out more about our Fall and future programs. The registration deadline for the Fall workshops is Friday, 15 October. For more information, visit our website or contact us at workshops@wordsinhere.com.
Do you wake to write only to find yourself occupied with things around the house instead? Here's a chance to write alone with writers. Writers meet weekly at Espresso Corner Baton (Amsterdam) to work. The first edition is Tuesday, 4 October! Read more about this here...
wordsinhere offers a variety of peer-run critique groups. These groups meet regularly and create respectful and constructive spaces in which writers can share their work with others. These groups provide community, critique, and discipline, and in combination with one or more of the workshops can offer a space to continue work both in progress and brand new.
