August Literary Picks
NEWS
BritLit has recently announced two fantastic talks which will help kick off its exciting second season! The first of these talks will be 28 September with James Meek, the internationally-awarded journalist of The Guardian, on his new novel The People's Act of Love (Uit Liefde van het Volk). Then on 11 November, John Berendt, US author of
international bestseller Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil will be talking on his latest release The City of Falling Angels. Looks to be another fantastic season! For more information, please visit www.britlit.info.
wordsinhere House Poet and Versal’s Managing Editor Cralan Kelder will be in Budapest this month to perform and present his new book Lemon Red. If you're in the area, and want to check it out, email Cralan for details: cralan@wordsinhere.com. (Be sure to delete the "DELETE_THIS" anti-spam text from the address link.)
This fall, wordsinhere officially arrives in Utrecht. Curator Anna Arov, in cooperation with the Luegen Cafe, will begin Salon des Mots. The first Salon will be 4 September as part of the Utrecht Uitfeest. Think of The Open Stanza cafe-style. More information will be available soon, but if you want to be involved in this fantastic new initiative, contact Anna at anna@wordsinhere.com. Critical reception of Versal's third edition has been very good and the word on the street is that you can't live without this local, international beauty.
The newly released Three includes the poetry and prose of Marilyn Hacker, Naomi Shihab Nye, and Russell Edson and lowland residents Anna Arov, Omar Perez, and Sylvia Hubers. Of Versal, Edson wrote that it is "what a literary magazine should be."
Versal is available around Amsterdam and at various locations in Europe and the USA. You can also buy it online and get Versal Two for a discounted price. It's urgent, unexpected, involved, and - believe it or not - cheaper than your average lit mag. Support local, international literature today!
CALLS FOR WRITERS
wordsinhere’s new initiative, The Speakeasy, aims to bring us ‘local, international’ writers together for easy conversation and general gathering merriment. The Speakeasy is every third Thursday of the month through August. Drop by, meet other writers, share work, experiences, resources, or just listen to the louder ones talk. Our focus is on ease, bringing local writers together in a living-room-like atmosphere and drinking tea and coffee. 3 euros covers drinks and snacks. Next Speakeasy: Thursday, 18 August; 6:30pm at The English Bookshop, Lauriergracht 71, Amsterdam.

AUGUST EVENTS WE'RE GOING TO ATTEND
It's that time of year again! Even though the weather here leaves much to be desired, all literary events indoors have shut down for the "summer". So if you're looking for something cultural to do, that might include some amount of literary ingredient, check out one of the many summer festivals. Our tips?
