The Poetry Series:
Workshop One Postponed to May!

The Poetry Series' first workshop, Assembling a Poem, has been postponed to Sunday, May 22! So register today!

From the people who bring you The Open Stanza and Versal, wordsinhere's PS is a unique (and cheap!) opportunity to explore poetry from the first line to the stage performance.

You don't have to "be a poet" - you don't even have to have written a poem! - to get something out of this unique opportunity. Let's face it: even novels need the twist of a good metaphor from time to time. What better way to strengthen your own writing than to revisit its beginning?

What will you gain from PS?
— a greater understanding of your own writing
— methods to jump-start the writing process and deepen its scope
— drafts of new poems
— revision techniques
— performance techniques

...and more!

Workshop instructors are published poets.

Join other writers for a day of exercises, discussions, and writing. The Series is open to anyone interested in writing, poetry, honing your metaphors, and performing on stage. Sign up for one, two, or all of the workshops! Check our site for details about the instructors, the workshops, and how to register.

Summer Stanzas!

Good things go year round.

Since The Open Stanza began in December 2002, it has taken a break during the summer months. For the spoken word, and especially the spoken word in Amsterdam, this seemed a smart idea considering the competition was sunshine.

But this year The Open Stanza is boldly going where they have never gone before: summer. Every third Sunday of the month starting in May, The Open Stanza will bring the bright light inside.

Join The Open Stanza on Sunday, 15 May for the first in its summer series! Read more about it here.

Versal Turns Three!

It's that time of year again! The third edition of the Netherland's only international, English-language literary magazine will arrive in only a few short weeks to bookstores and livingrooms worldwide.

This charm of a third edition includes known and new writers and artists from longitudes near and far, including Russell Edson, Marilyn Hacker, and Naomi Shihab Nye.

Versal Three will meet its readers for the first time during the Amsterdam Literary Festival 26-29 May, so register today for your chance to meet it face-to-face.

Keighley Goes to Vienna

wordsinhere House Poet Jeremy Keighley will be a featured performer at the Kafka open mic in Vienna this Friday, 6 May. Keighley lived in Vienna before he moved to Amsterdam and was involved in the international writing community there.

InPlayers Presents
The Merry Wives of Windsor

19-22 May, 8:30pm

Theater de Cameleon, Amsterdam

Over 400 years ago Queen Elizabeth, by royal command, had Shakespeare write his only prose play, The Merry Wives of Windsor. According to tradition, he hacked out this tale of Sir John Falstaff in love, or at least in lust, in just two weeks. A travelling group of players of our time are earnestly rehearsing their lines and songs as they want to show, ‘how Shakespeare ought to go.’ Not everyone agrees on the interpretation. The costumes are not ready. Some actors are still in the pub. But the rehearsal goes on and the misadventures of Falstaff as he attempts time and again to bed the witty Windsor wives are brought to a surprising climax. Will would have loved it.
