Stanzas in Sign

This month wordsinhere and The Open Stanza present Stanzas in Sign, a unique experience of poetry at its foundations. For the first time in the Netherlands, hearing and deaf poets will perform on one stage, spanning the edges of poetry itself. Friday, 21 November will be a night of stories, images, beats, and sign.

Sign language poetry is distinct among most forms of poetry in that it can only be experienced in performance. In this way, sign poetry comes close to the origins of poetic art as performance art. Wim Emmerik (the Netherlands) and Giselle Sulaika Sahaira Meyer (Curaçao), two of the Netherlands' leading sign poets, will take us into this unique, visual poetry.

Hearing storyteller Sahand Sahebdivani (Iran) will lead our imaginations into the spins of a modern-day bard. Poet Mos Volke (the Netherlands) is a performer who wields the stage in expert words. And of course we'll have live music and DJ Iron Melon's own form of spins. Sign interpretations will be provided by Gerdinand Wagenaar; speaking interpretations will be provided by Anja Hiddinga.

The evening also includes a special screening of the film-poem Groei by Wim Emmerik, Anja Hiddinga, and Leendert Pot.

This is a not-to-be-missed Stanza.
