NEWS

first issue of Versal on its way

Thanks to everyone who took a chance on a new journal and submitted to Versal; we were overwhelmed with the amount and quality of the work we received. So, development of the first issue is now underway. If you're interested in owning a first edition of this fine (soon-to-be) journal - for a mere €8 - email orders@wordsinhere.com. You can secure your copy today!

Also, check the Versal pages on the site to find ways you can get involved in this important and unique project. Our advertising and sponsorship programs make it possible for you to contribute to the present and future of this extraordinary literary journal.

wordsinhere went to Nieuwegein

Wednesday, 23 October, Prue and Meg (along with our devoted Annerie, Daniël, Chantal, and Neb) trekked out to Nieuwegein to join The OpSpraak Gang in a special evening of poetry and the presentation of their annual literature prizes. Erin was supposed to join us, and she fought off her cold until the very last minute, but her efforts were - in the end - utterly useless. So it was all up to Prue and Meg, but the night was no disaster. The folks from BeeldSpraak were welcoming and Prue and Meg gave excellent - and at times, unusual - performances of their poetry. We appreciate having been invited to participate in such an event and look forward to the chance to collaborate again. Congratulations to the winners of the literature prize!

CALLS FOR WRITERS

you're a writer...but can you speak?

The Open Stanza - for the performance of words.

We’re looking for writers with urgent voices for The Open Stanza. We are always accepting submissions, but if you want to try for the debut night - 20 December - send up to 5 poems or 1000 word sample of your prose by 1 December, 2002. Send to openstanza@wordsinhere.com or by post Van Hogendorpstraat 123-I, 1051 BL Amsterdam. Submissions by post should include a SASE or an email address for reply.

come out from behind your desk

So your writing gets done when you're on your own. Of course. You're at home, behind your computer; you're at the bar, cappuccino in hand; you're in the park, shivering. What happens when the poem is done? the final chapter written? the sestina perfectly aligned, fonted, laser printed? Well, Emily Dickenson, with email, the internet, and the local corner bar, more than simply being folded and stuffed into hat boxes. Versal and The Open Stanza are just the beginning. wordsinhere is made by the people in it, not the other way around. Email Meg to find out how you can get involved.
