Lit Event Roundup
NEWS
With Cralan successfully married, our tickets booked for Berlin, and autumn (or should we call this the monsoon?) decidedly upon us, it's safe to say that the well-oiled gears of literary Amsterdam are already pitched in motion.
Yes! We're going to Berlin! Versal's editors have been invited to perform at the Checkpoint reading series which has been organized to herald the upcoming Bordercrossing Berlin literary magazine. Megan M. Garr, Cralan Kelder, Robert Glick, and Anna Arov will perform at FUEL on Sunday, September 10. If you're in the area, try to come down! Details can be found under "News" here: www.bordercrossing-berlin.com.
If there's one thing we'd like you to take from this month's newsletter, it's the fact that there's a heck of a lot to do around here right now, and we hope you find something you're looking for.
The Fall Program is now available and registrations are being accepted for The Writer's Workshop. This season's workshops include a 10-week creative writing workshop, a 6-week workshop in short fiction, and a 6-week poetry workshop. Spend the cold, gray months of Fall in Amsterdam producing work and hanging out with other writers in the cozy downstairs of The English Bookshop. All of our workshops are led by practicing, published poets and writers and are limited in participant numbers to maintain a quality level of individual support. And importantly, they are priced for the writer's pocket.
Check out our Fall Program here or drop in at the Bookshop for our brochure. Registrations are also taken through the site and at the Bookshop directly.
We're hosting a free Open Day Info Session at the Bookshop on Sunday, 3 September from 2:30 to 4:30. Come down for some tea, meet the workshop leaders and organizers, and find out how The Writer's Workshop can encourage your write side!
Versal was recently reviewed in New Pages, one of our favorite resource and review websites. If you haven't checked out New Pages yet, this site is a must-read for any writer. Here's a bit of what reviewer Matt Bell said about Versal v.4:
Rather than espousing any particular aesthetic ideal or political philosophy, Versal takes the high road by including a collage of styles that represents the diversity of both its writers and the literary scenes from which they hail.
Subscribers will not only receive the latest copy of Versal and a copy of V when it comes out next May, but will also receive a copy of Versal v.3 thrown in gratis. So subscribe today!
The Open Stanza off-pages it every time with living talent from slam to sonnet, from Los Angeles to Hong Kong. The monthly mix you've grown to love launches into its 5 th season with an on-stage anthology of the best of local, living talent. No dead(ening) poets here.
Whether you're on stage that night or all-ears from the audience, The Open Stanza is the monthly spot for local international poets, writers, performance and spoken word artists, musicians and DJs. Meet the folks behind Versal, Amsterdam's only international lit mag, and become part of the crowd that is putting Amsterdam back on the international literary map.
The 1 October opening show will feature the Amsterdam Anthology, Rina Mushonga and her full band (celebrating the release of her new EP!), the illustrious emcee Prue Duggan, and our favorite DJ Sudomodo. Entrance is only a fiver, and yes, the Versal cocktail (otherwise known as the Big V) will be on sale.
