NEWS The Open Stanza off-pages it every time with living talent from slam to sonnet, from Los Angeles to Hong Kong. The monthly mix you've grown to love launches into its 5 th season with an on-stage anthology of the best of local, living talent. No dead(ening) poets here. Whether you're on stage that night or all-ears from the audience, The Open Stanza is the monthly spot for local international poets, writers, performance and spoken word artists, musicians and DJs. Meet the folks behind Versal, Amsterdam's only international lit mag, and become part of the crowd that is putting Amsterdam back on the international literary map. The 1 October opening show will feature the Amsterdam Anthology, Rina Mushonga and her full band (celebrating the release of her new EP!), the illustrious emcee Prue Duggan, and our favorite DJ Sudomodo. Entrance is only a fiver, and yes, the Versal cocktail (otherwise known as the Big V) will be on sale. CALLS FOR WRITERS LIT EVENT ROUNDUP Sugar Mash Up! Saturday 2 September, 10:30pm Nachttheater Sugar Factory, Amsterdam The opening party of Sugar's new season is a mash of its best, including The Open Stanza—represented by the irreverent Cralan Kelder. Bestseller and National Book Award winner Jonathan Franzen joins us to discuss his new memoir. The Discomfort Zone: A Personal History takes an intimate and humorous look at his own adolescence, his mother’s death and America during the sometimes tumultuous 1960s-70s. Franzen is a Fulbright scholar, a Guggenheim fellow and one of The New Yorker’s “20 Writers for the 21st Century”. His previous work, The Corrections, is one of the most successful literary novels of this century so far. In cooperation with Prometheus Publishers. Bas Heijne will present and moderate the evening.
