The Return of the Stanza...
Letter from Meg
The Open Stanza: September 19!
16th Annual Short Grain Writing Contest
September Literary Picks
R,
The city has its arms half
back into jackets and I've started seeing scarves again. I'm reminded
today of a morning in early spring. I was on my balcony reading
an old translation of Modern Dutch poetry which hadn't bothered
to translate the whole of poems. It was like reading only the headlines
of history. I was distracted suddenly by a sound. It took a moment
to identify it: rain on leaves. We are used to rain but I had missed
its percussion.
Putting together the literary
calendar, I realized how quiet we get in the summers here. We disappear,
go on holiday and to festivals, but now that Fall is back we're
returning to the small bars and smaller stages, and there are so
many of them. There's no money in it, no funding, but people are
still writing. Grossman said that because language is never our
own we are always demonized by it. But I am thinking something else
today. Poetry works because it's made of something we all have.
Versal closed its submission
window this weekend. Now we have to choose. We go to print in December.
Prue said we keep the sun out in the winter here by bringing it
inside. The Open Stanza begins again this month.
The rain is back in Amsterdam.
But we still have the leaves.

NEWS
Write this down in your agenda. The Open
Stanza returns on Friday, September 19. This is a debut show
you don't want to just hear about later.
underwateramsterdam.com
says the Stanza is 'about as cool as poetry can get.' That
ain't bad for a bunch of poetry nerds, right? We've asked house
DJ Iron Melon to take the funk up a notch or five
to welcome special guests Mohogany L. Browne & JivePoetic.
Two of the State's top poets are on their European tour and will
help us ring in a new season of the Stanza. The night also includes
a special performance from wordsinhere's Prue Duggan
and live music from Rina, plus.
The Open Stanza is held monthly at
Volta, Houtmankade 336 in Amsterdam. Doors open at 8pm for drinks
and dance; show starts at 9pm. Plan the whole night in so you can
boogie on the stage yourself to the Melon's funky
tunes. Entrance is 5euro.
Seriously. What else would you want to do?
CALLS FOR WRITERS
The Open Stanza begins its second
season starting 19 September. We're looking for poets and writers
from anywhere, any language, any style. As long as your words get
off the page. We're also looking for musicians, so spread the
word. Info and submissions: openstanza@wordsinhere.com.
Have you ever hosted a poetry night? Been
on the crew for a literary magazine? Organized a novelists' writing
group? Met up with writers in a dark bar's corner and argued over
a line break?
The network that wordsinhere is building
and the work we do aims to support writers and poets in their own
ambitions and ideas. If you want to get involved in some way, even
if you don't know what that way is, email info@wordsinhere.com.
We'll meet up for coffee. That's how it usually begins.
Grain Magazine is now accepting entries
for the 16th Annual Short Grain Writing Contest.
This year the Short Grain Contest offers
a total of twelve prizes of $500 each for original, unpublished
works in four categories: Dramatic Monologue, Postcard Story, Prose

receives a one-year subscription to Grain.
