NEWS
Over here at wordsinhere we're getting ready for an exciting new cultural season. We'll be busy most of this month making preparations for September, when the gears of Amsterdam's literary world start to wake after summer sun's hibernation.
In the coming weeks, you'll be hearing about the Fall programs of The Open Stanza, The Writing Workshops, the new and improved Stop, Drop, & Write, and Versal—which opens its submission period again September 15. The editors are already dusting off their reading glasses. Please don't send us work yet! but if you want to get a head start, our general guidelines are posted here.
If you're like us, then you're a frequent visitor to bookstores in your hometown. Sure, ordering online is easy—and sure, we do that too. But there's something extraordinary about being in a room full of books towering around you. That's why we do everything we can to get Versal into as many of our favorite bookstores and libraries as possible.
If you live in Amsterdam, Utrecht, New York, Geneva, San Francisco, Paris, Berlin, or Nashville (i.e., Music City USA), then picking up a copy is as easy as dropping by a bookstore like:
The English Bookshop, Amsterdam, the Netherlands
City Lights Books, San Francisco, USA
Housing Works Bookstore Café, New York City, USA
McNally Robinson Books, New York City, USA
The Red Wheelbarrow, Paris, France
Café Rosa, Berlin, Germany
Off the Shelf, Geneva, Switzerland
...and many more! Check out our complete list of distributors here.
You can also find Versal this month in London! Until the end of August, Amsterdam bookstore
Boekie Woekie has a UK location at Gallery Hauser & Wirth alongside the exhibitions of Dieter Roth and Martin Kippenberger. Address: Coppermill, 92-108 Cheshire Street, London E2 6EJ. The bookshop will be open from Tuesday to Sunday from 12 to 7pm.
And did we mention you can also order Versal online? Oh yes. www.wordsinhere.com/orderversal.html
wordsinhere's Utrecht personification, Salon des Mots, has a new home! Hofman Café has welcomed us to their program. We're very excited to be a part of Hofman Café's exciting cultural community. Our first show will be Sunday, September 24.
wordsinhere's stages are open to writers and word performers of any persuasion (e.g., style, genre, language, culture, gender, etc.). If you're interested in being a featured performer at Salon des Mots, check out our call for performers here.
Big news from this end! Prue Duggan—probably best known for her onstage Stanza banter as our illustrious emcee—takes the awesome step this month towards becoming a full-time writer. She's quit her day job to focus her energies on her writing and her work with wordsinhere. Standing ovation!
And Cralan Kelder has new work coming out soon in Noon (Tokyo) and Island (Edinburgh). Not only that, but he's getting married this month to a beautiful scientist from the USA. Congrats, Cralan!
Also, we'd like to welcome a new member of the team.
Elvin Priyadi came on board in July as wordsinhere's Web Design and Programming Intern.
In 2002, Elvin moved here from Indonesia to study Information Technology at the Hogeschool in Diemen. Wherever she goes her laptop goes, too, but pen and paper are always within reach. She's been writing since she was a child. She will be helping wordsinhere develop the smartest online presence in the literary scene. We're happy to have her on board!
CALLS FOR WRITERS
A new fiction critique group will begin on 12 September 2006, at Cultural Centre Mezrab (50 Tweede Lauriersdwaarstraat). It will meet every other Tuesday. The evenings will begin at 7.30 and run roughly until 9.30. For more information and to join, contact Kai at kai@wordsinhere.com.
