NEWS
First, a big THANK YOU to everyone who made it down to the Versal Four Release Party last month! We hope you had as much fun as we did! And if you didn't manage to pick up a Versal while you were there, be sure to drop by The English Bookshop or one of the other fine sales locations to get your copy. They are going faster than hotcakes! And if you did pick up a copy, and liked it, why not get Versal Two or Three to add to your collection?
And despite the atrocious weather, the summer break is upon us—things around here are going to get a little quieter where poetry stages are concerned. But no fear! Poetry International is just around the corner, Stop, Drop, & Write, The Speakeasy, and the writing groups are still on the go, and there's always something literary happening at the various summer festivals around the country. Check the Lit Event Roundup in this newsletter for a few happenings we recommend.
The top three reasons given 'out there' to buy literary mags and journals (NB: this is an unscientific conclusion) are:
1. support independent publishing
2. buy magazines because we want to be published in them
3. sample a copy before we send work
You'll notice that we've used all of the above over the years, because they are all true: we should support independent publishing, we should support magazines because they support us by publishing us, we should be familiar with the magazines and journals to which we send our work. These three sales pitches are actually a kind of call-to-arms for the greater good of Literature. Fair enough. Versal is certainly in the rank and file of that defense.
But there's so much more to Versal than a testimonial to Literature's healthy heartbeat. The proof is in the pages! So in the coming months, you're going to get new reasons for why you should add Versal to your bookshelf.
Of course, we hope that one of the reasons we give will strike the proverbial chord that says, 'What the heck, what's a measly 8 euros gonna cost me?'
4. Versal will make you remember all sorts of things, like why you actually did like French class, or how big the world is and what a spinning globe looks like.
5. To borrow slightly from A.M. Homes: this book will change your life.

Our Utrecht home, Café de Leugen, has been sold to a new owner! So the June Salon has been cancelled. It will return in the Fall, however, bringing the best of local Utrecht alongside poets & writers from around the world. If you're interested in performing, click here.
Curator and Fiction Editor of Versal Robert Glick is on a roll. He has a piece in the newly released Travelers' Tales Prague, which collects over 20 stories from the city that inspired compositions from Mozart and novels from Kafka. The anecdotes featured include a Kafkaesque visit to the castle, reminiscences of a supermodel native daughter's exile and return, musings on southern Bohemia's fairy-tale appearance, and a fast-paced joust with the local police. Robert's story is of a performance-art show gone hilariously wrong in Plzen. Travelers' Tales Prague shines a bright light on a stirring place. You can place an order for it at The English Bookshop.
And: Robert's story "Release" has made it to the semi-finals/honorable mention/finals of four contests: Passages North Waasmode Prize, Gulf Coast Fiction Contest, Summer Literary Seminars Fiction Contest, and the Abroad Summer Workshops Fiction Contest. Congratulations, Robert!
