IN JEREMY'S VIEW

Book Review of Rimbaud by Graham Robb

A few months ago I was lucky enough to see Graham Robb present his book in Amsterdam, which persuaded me to buy it. After two previous books on other French literature (Balzac and Victor Hugo) Robb’s 2001 subject was Rimbaud. Arthur Rimbaud: the ultimate poet maudit, the French Kurt Cobain/Jim Morrison. Quoted by everyone from Dylan to Patti Smith and darling of would be poet rebels everywhere. More than 100 years after his death more than 20 percent of French schoolboys identify with Rimbaud.

One view of Rimbaud is the teenage genius who inexplicably gave up poetry, than traveled the world as an unsuccessful trader, dying young, broke and frustrated.

Graham Robb has a subtle British sense of humor and makes his points with a occasional neat twist of sarcasm. He likes nothing more than deflating the various Rimbaud myths. Everyone’s favorite anarchist poet was apparently a very successful capitalist, gun runner and colonialist (if it happened to suit his needs). Robb also portrays Rimbaud as an obnoxious blasphemous masturbator, a devious manipulator and skilled satirist. On one occasion also stabbed someone at a poetry reading. Not something we would wish to encourage at The Open Stanza!

Rimbaud is a fascinating, well-written book written with immense humor and compassion for its subject. The poet emerges as a contradictory but fascinating figure. Some amazing poetry too of course. Why is Rimbaud a great poet? What is his fascination? Read the book and find out.

Halcyon Days and Other Works: a dance evening by Jelena Petrovic

Saturday 7 February, 8:30pm

Sunday 8 February, 4pm

Melkweg Theaterzaal, Amsterdam

Jelena Petrovic's latest stage concoction takes its cue from the defeat of weather as a natural, untainted phenomenon. From minute-to-minute weather updates, to melting icebergs and spreading ozone holes, via weather forecasters as a symbol of the derivative and the superficial, Halcyon Days traverses the geography of the human invasion. We have hijacked our weather, as we have hijacked the land, the oceans, the air and everything in between. But all is not lost. We still have therapeutic shopping. Reservations: 020 531 8181. More info: www.melkweg.nl. •

FACE: a new choreography by Sara Wookey

FACE is the new evening-length performance work by Sara Wookey. The point of departure is the word ‘face’ and its multiple meanings. As a noun, the human face; as a verb, to face in a certain direction and, more than that, the expression that means to deal with or undergo something unpleasant or difficult, as in ‘face the facts’ or ‘face it’.
