NEWS

The Open Stanza returned
on Friday, the 24th of January to give Amsterdam another solid,
beautiful night of poetry, prose, and music. After bringing well-known
performers and wordsinhere to the same stage last December,
January’s Stanza showcased three performers new to
the Dutch scene: Cralan Kelder, a Dutch-American who writes his
observations as though to remind us of something we forgot we had
seen; Ellen de Vries, whose deceptively quiet work combines old-English
fairytale with modern expectations; and Iriel Sayeed, from Chicago,
whose political and spiritual words happen on stage as if new and
instantaneous. wordsinhere’s own Jeremy Keighley also
joined the performers, returning to The Open Stanza stage
with his characteristic rhythmic diction.
Musical guest Edie, accompanied
by Martin Motola, gave an excellent performance; her intimate lyrics
found an immediacy on stage which stilled the audience. DJ Iron
Melon got us moving with his distinctive mix and played, I swear,
until the last man left.
On our Stanza pages
you'll find information
and pictures of the performers and a picture
gallery of the evening. And don't forget to come down
to the next one – Friday, 21 February!
If you’re interested
in performing your writing or being a musical guest at The Open
Stanza, see below (under Calls for Writers) for details or check
us out online.
Maybe you're a bit weary of literary magazines;
we are too. That's why we made Versal. If you haven't noticed
already, there's a preview
of Versal's first edition online AND, if you haven't
bought one already, you can now purchase Versal in a growing
number of shops in Amsterdam, such as La Luna in De Pijp or Demodakos
in the Jordaan. We still have our old-school
ordering process of course and you can always buy a copy at
The Open Stanza.
CALLS FOR WRITERS
With the realization of wordsinhere's
first projects, it's time to regroup and gather new ideas for the
future — together again for what we've warmly dubbed our umbrella
meeting. It's for anyone interested in the more 'organizational'
aspect of wordsinhere and open to everyone with passion and/or
ideas. We'll discuss the next steps for Versal and The
Open Stanza, new workshops, etc.
It will be held at Meg's flat in Amsterdam
on Sunday, 2 February at 3pm. If you are interested in attending
this 'umbrella' meeting, or would like to find out how you can get
involved, email Meg.
The Open Stanza is always on the
lookout for writers who perform their work with risk, who give their
writings a sound well-deserved, who take their words from print
to stage without something getting lost in the transfer.
Send samples of your writing (poetry, prose,
whatever) to openstanza@wordsinhere.com
or by post, Van Hogendorpstraat 123-I, 1051 BL Amsterdam. Upcoming
dates of The Open Stanza: February 21, March 21, April 25,
May 23, June 20.
