Meet & Eat

Saturday October 10, 11:30am-1:30pm

The English Bookshop, Amsterdam

Grill the editors of Versal: A candid conversation about publishing, rejections, aesthetics and etcetera.

Amsterdam's very own international literary journal is open again for submissions. Are you ready?

The editors of this acclaimed little mag invite you to join them for lunch. In this informal and relaxed setting, the floor is yours. What happens "behind the scenes" at a literary journal like Versal? How does work get accepted? Rejected? What will Versal absolutely not publish? What makes its editors jump for joy?

This lunch is an excellent opportunity for anyone pursuing publishing in little mags, Versal or otherwise. Face-to-face with the editors in a candid conversation about the ins and outs of the publishing world of journals.

This event is free. Bring your own lunch. Versal will provide drinks and sides. Space is limited so please RSVP at versal@wordsinhere.com.

Salon des Mots - Season Premiere!

Saturday October 10, 8pm

Atelier de Werkvloer, Utrecht

Salon des Mots is gearing up for the new poetry season. To start, we have a new location in the heart of Utrecht, Atelier de Werkvloer! We decided to get back to the roots of Salon des Mots, which began five years ago in an Oudegracht atelier. Originally the salon was conceived of poets, performance artists, musicians and guests mingling in the intimate setting of candles, sculptures and paintings. Our new gallery location is the perfect venue where different cultures, languages and genres will mesh resulting in a totally unique poetry show. Our first show on Saturday, October 10th has a strong Paris presence, with jazz pianist Jobic Le Masson (FR) and percussionist John Betsch (US) as well as resident poets Jennifer K. Dick (US), Amy Hollowell (US), Rufo Quintavalle (UK) and Arubian/Argentinean writer, Arturo Desimone (AW). Entrance: free. More info...

Hybrid Eyes / Dubbele Ogen

October 21-24, 8pm

RozenTheater, Amsterdam

A performance by Esther Mugambi. Kenya and I. We are like former lovers who don't remember sleeping together. A childhood in Kenya has left Esther Mugambi wondering what kind of woman she might have been if she had stayed there. Inspired by East African VJs who translate foreign films into local languages in a highly subjective way, Mugambi mediates a visual trip between Nairobi and Amsterdam, adding her own commentary to splice reality and fiction. Playing with the fickleness of memory, she creates a world that speaks sharply about a country that has come into focus recently thanks to Obama's heritage and the violence following Kenya's presidential elections.
